Liu Zong-ming was born in Puli Township, Nantou County in Jan, 1950. When he was in primary school, he was captivated by “XinSheng Childrens’ Weekly” comics and stories by Gao Shan-feng, Liu Hsing-hsing, Niu Ge and Xie Wei-tu and was influenced by the work of popular comic artists featured in “Comic King” including Yeh Hong-shen, Cheng Dng-guo, Hsu Ch-ling and Lin Da-song, whose work he copied to practice . His creativity has always been a product of a lot of watching, learning, thinking and drawing. He published short works from the age of 15.
After he graduated from Puli high school, he enrolled in National Taiwan University of Arts to study sketch, esthetics, and three-dimensional modeling. He started producing series comics at the same time. His series comic “Discover Radium” won an award from the Social Education Department, Ministry of Education in 1970. and his “HuanShengManTinYuan” won the same award again next year. “The Scarecrow of Kaka” and “Where is the sister” followed.
After graduating from college and completing national service in 1970, he was an editor and art designer in Hong Jian Quan Foundation. He founded the baby monthly publication, "Xiao Su Mew (small seedling)" , with his wife (Chen Fan-mei). He then studied puppet play, shadow puppets and cartoon making. In 1986 he joined the “MoQi child theatrical troupe,” playing a clown, and his performances were very well-received. He published over 100 works, including “rainbow cat”, “thousand birds”, “Ha le”, “Interesting Brothers”,….etc.
In over 40 years as a comic artists the features of his work have be “humor, imagination and innocence.”His works are published today in Meichou Shijie Ribao, Mandarin Daily News and various weeklies.
He is frequently asked to be a judge or adviser for comic and drawing activities, showing the respect that he commands in comic and art circles.
Today, Mr. Liu is a standing member of the ROC Comic Artists’ Association and a part-time professor in the Department of Multi-media and Animation, College of Design, National Taiwan University of the Arts |
